Following reports from thecoasterkings.com it appears that the long rumoured RMC makeover of Gwazi at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has been confirmed.
Gwazi was a duelling wooden coaster that opened at the park in 1999. For much of its life, the attraction was plagued with problems and earned itself a reputation for its less than smooth ride experience. For the most part, this was due to the use of Philadelphia Toboggan Company trains on a CGI (Great Coasters Internation) track.
Speculation began shortly after Busch Gardens announced that Tigris would be coming to the park in 2019. During the Press Conference, this little teaser was given.
“We wanted to make this a little bit of a hybrid attraction announcement… Through Gwazi’s existence, it’s always been a little bit of a rocky ride, so we decided we’re going to go ahead and revamp Gwazi into a new attraction.”
Although it might seem the coaster community was clutching at straws a bit with this one it wouldn’t be the first time something like this has happened. In fact, it seems to be becoming a bit of a tradition for parks announcing RMC projects. Kings Dominion used the tagline “There’s Really More Coming” and Cedar Point held a funeral for “Mean Streak” with its last rights being read by “Richard. Michael. Crosby” both of these teasers happened long before each of their respective parks announced any involvement with RMC.
The speculation continued to grow when Busch Gardens submitted a planning application to the City Tampa on the 23rd of October for the “Demolition of selected portions of an existing site structure, selected buildings, and portions of buildings”.
But this week due to the fantastic detective work of the team over at The Coaster Kings it looks like the speculation is coming to an end. On December 21st 2018 the planning application was updated and confirmed the licensed professional that would be running the project was none other than Rocky Mountain Construction.
Although we are still probably quite a way off of any official announcement from Busch Gardens Tampa (while the focus on the opening of Tigris) it is great to know that it is now 99.9% confirmed that the world is going to be getting another one of RMC’s fantastic hybrid coasters.
